New Jersey's Laws Governing Police Vehicular Pursuit
Officer Accountability:
New Jersey has a statewide pursuit policy. New Jersey officers are required to follow their pursuit policy and law enforcement agencies are held accountable when officers do not follow the policy. According to Jim Phillips, president of PursuitWatch, "The New Jersey policy is better than the majority of the policies in the United States because at least officers do not pursue for traffic violations and misdemeanors."
Many cities have already limited police chases to only the most violent felonies. Their vehicular pursuit policies clearly state that public safety comes first, especially when the criminal can be caught later so the public and officers are not in harm's way.
